Beyond the Endgame
Beyond the Endgame: Abstract Painting in Manchester (Manchester Art Gallery September 6 to October 12, 2003), was an exhibition showcasing North West artists whose work explored painting as an expanded practice The exhibition and publication were the result of Ben Cook’s research fellowship at Manchester Metropolitan University from 2002/4. Cook proposed and curated this exhibition, and also the accompanying exhibition at MMU, Documents, which displayed the ephemera and research gathered during his fellowship. The publication (see publications) charts the development of the contemporary art scene in Manchester, and reveals a history of artist-initiated galleries and projects in the city. These activities have combined to produce a vibrant arts infrastructure for the many young artists who now choose Manchester as a place to live and work.
